Portable Cellular HotSpot vs. AirCard Facts

Cellular Carrier Certified Modems/Routers with Separated, Industrial Grade Antennas

The Portable Hot Spot does not employ Air Card/Data Card technology to connect to a Cellular Carrier’s Infrastructure. They utilize a commercial quality cellular modem in conjunction with a WiFi IP device (Wireless Router) to serve multiple, versus singular, IP devices (laptops, PDAs etc). This implementation allows the device to operate via one Data Subscription and supports multiple IP devices. Our use of a separated, industrial grade antenna system provides the optimal connectivity and bandwidth to the cellular carrier. Within EVDO Rev A coverage areas they can connect up to 12 IP Devices simultaneously via Wireless (WiFi) and Ethernet connectivity.

Air Cards/Data Cards

These devices connect a single Laptop directly to a Cellular Carrier Infrastructure (Cell Tower) wirelessly. EV-DO utilizes two antennas; one for receiving and the other for transmitting. The EV-DO antennas in an Air Card are reduced in size and embedded closely together within the Air Card. Given that the EV-DO specifications recommend the antenna separation be maximized; the close proximity and size of the antennas in an Air Card do not provide the optimal connection and bandwidth performance available with EV-DO.
